Playing

Cora is SUCH a sweet sister to Flower – most of the time. The age difference isn’t ideal for playing together so I appreciate it that much more when the two get along. But they have their moments…

Flower called me on the phone very upset – Cora wasn’t playing nice! She was supposed to have a girl barbie to play with her own girl barbie but Cora picked a BOY. And then she wasn’t following the script. And then she made up her OWN script. And then…”Cora’s barbie called the cops on MY barbie!!” she wailed into the phone.

I could.not.stop.laughing. The inner-redneck is coming out ;)

My last post about pictures made me want to go look through old photos which led to some scanning – there are some great memories in those albums!

This:
Flower

brought back so many memories! Flower was a tiny child for years (not sure if it was a result of having been born early or not) but what she lacked in size she more than made up for in character. She’s 1 here and is pictured with her “twin brother” Jackpot.; they’re the same age and were inseparable during her toddler years. He loved her mostly because there was almost always some residual stickiness to be sampled and she loved him because he was an animated plaything that couldn’t get very far away from her torture play.

Never having had a pet in my life, I really didn’t want a dog but he won my heart with his gentleness, complete obedience and playful heart; I think those traits are a result of his having been literally, rescued from the streets. His good character was especially important because Flower didn’t know the meaning of the words “gentle, stop, no, don’t hurt, ouch or don’t hit”. That dog is a saint. I also have lots of pics of this same little urchin-child curled up to sleep in her fur-brother’s bed. I was always horrible grossed out by this and had to immediately bathe and/or wash every.single.thing but, a tiny little un-grossed out piece of my heart was happy to see the obvious love and connection between my youngest baby and this fur-creature.

See those hideous vertical blinds in the picture? They were in a perpetual state of disarray thanks to Ms. Terror here before I finally gave up and took them down. In the background is the hideous vintage paneling that was on every wall in the den and you can just make out the beginning of the fireplace hearth on the left. Under Jack’s bed is the equally hideous vintage tile that came with the house. I’m so glad those things are long GONE!

While battling with my computer to upload pictures over the last week or so, I’ve had the time be overwhelmed by the sheer number of photos I’ve stored. Not only do I have too many pictures to keep track of, I can’t seem to settle on one method of organization. Some  are stored in folders by event and by person and some folders are just a nice conglomerate blob of whatever was on my camera at the time – think weddings, baths and craft projects hanging out together. Not pretty and just a tad overwhelming ‘ya know? Add to that how I haven’t had anything PRINTED in months and my left eye develops a teeny, tiny twitch. I’ve got to get to the printing and the organizing and the shoving into photo albums already!

What’s that? No. No I don’t scrap the pictures. Yes – yes I know, I’m surprised at myself too. Yes, I’m crafty and have lots of archival quality papers and inks and supplies but I just had to let that perfectionism nightmare go!

I can still, vividly recall my first exposure to the whole scrapbooking craze; it was at a Homemaking night where the teacher was also (ahem) a brand new Creative Memories consultant. It was SO beautiful! So organized (which was especially enticing)! No decent person would stand for their precious family memories to be trapped behind toxic plastic wrappers or housed in poisonous acidic books for even one more second. Scrapbookers – unite! I was in love.

Until I realized I would never be DONE. I love projects, I love crafting, I love creating but…there has to be an end in sight. The picture-taking never ends!

In my mind I had these images of perfectly scrapbooked memories that would somehow, in some way, bring me joy and happiness. The pages would have clear documentation identifying each person, location, thought in their heads and back story – written in my own handwriting of course  – as an heirloom for future generations. I spent hours scouring stores for the perfect shade of red that would coordinate with the ribbon in my daughter’s hair, the embellishments and the stickers. It was a nightmare; a nightmare I made for myself!

I have created 6, amazing, perfect scrapbooks and not one of them was for my own family. I was the PTA Historian at our local elementary for a while, I’ve done others for friends as favors and others as gifts. I wish I had pictures of those labors of love (because they truely are LABOR-intensive) to have something to show for all my work.

In the end though – I’m so happy to have let go of the scrapbooking guilt that I put on myself for so long! It’s not about the scrapping – it’s about the pictures. So long as I use archival-quality photo albums, I’m happy to store our memories in those little photo pockets.

Now…should I be scanning and backing up all those pre-digital photos? Eeeek!

Oink

Wasn’t I just rhapsodizing about the joys of fall and winter? I may have forgotten to include a tiny little negative – cold and flu season. Yuck. Also, why has cold and flu season arrived so darn EARLY this year?

In case the title doesn’t give it away, Moe came down with a fever which quickly blossomed into the flu that was later confirmed as yes…the dreaded Type A flu otherwise known as SWINE FLU. Of course. And of course he came down with it one day after attending a stake-wide, Priest/Laurel overnight campout activity that involved being in an enclosed vehicle for 4+ hours and sharing a tent with numerous other people. I really-really-really enjoyed when our stake YW presidency thought it would be a good idea to send out an email to every.single.ward in the stake to alert them (with first and last names included – no anonymity here!) of our infected status. Ugh.

I immediately sent the girls to Lita’s house and put Moe and I in lock-down status (little booger shared his germs with me and I was OUT within two days).  Having a child that pretty much functions on half a heart makes me nervous about her getting sick!

Quarantine was incredibly boring as I’m sure you can imagine. WD went to work early every day and came home late (after visiting with the girls at Lita’s) to sleep on the couch. Moe and I pretty much slept and lounged around the house in a near-constant state of misery. I must say he was very sweet in the end when he was feeling better; bringing me food and trying to take my temp for me! We survived on canned food and whatever was in the freezer. I found out later that LOTS of people had offered to bring us food, soup, anything and WD turned everyone down. Thanks WD. I look forward to tending to your next illness…

The good of this is that now Moe and I should be immune to type A flu for the rest of winter. Since I’ve also been vaccinated for the regular flu I’m feeling particularly invincible now - mwa-ha-ha-ha-ha!

The three of us (Moe, Cora and I) each got prescriptions for Tamiflu (preventative for Cora) and when Moe and I were fever-free for over 24-hours, I scrubbed the house down and welcomed the girls back.

Being a mom is really interesting in that, sometimes I can’t breathe for lack of space. But as soon as the bulk of my children were away, I couldn’t function for lack of children around me! I sure LOVE my children. Seriously love them :)

One disappointment that came of this flu is the postponement of Cora’s cardio appointment. When I called the cardio’s office to let them know we had a sibling that tested positive there was no discussion, just a cancellation and a new appointment. Cora’s been pretty stressed about the appointment and I really hated to prolong her worry like that :( . Her appointment is set for this coming Friday the 16th.

I took a few pictures of the flu fun (for posterity ya know) as well as at the campout. However I’m having picture loading issues. After 3 hours of my life being wasted last night, my computer and I have retreated to opposite corners. I WILL NOT concede defeat but considering it’s been 2 weeks since I’ve posted anything I’m feeling defeated. Of course this happens right after proclaiming to the world that I want to post more often. Of course.

Take care of yourselves people. Wash your hands and get plenty of rest to avoid the flu!

Sooooo ready…

For COLD air, long sleeves, burning wood in the fireplace and boots. I LOVE fall. YAY for fall!!!

And next….

WINTER!!!

As YW pres, I’m over the Laurels, my second counselor is over the MiaMaids and my second counselor is over the Beehives – in addition to the advisors that teach their respective classes every week. The Laurel group is the smallest one and the Bishop wanted to take the girls on a road trip with him and his wife, WD , me and the girls. There were 4 girls at the time and HS graduation was just weeks away for 2 of them; a perfect time for one last fling!

The original plan was to rent a van but we discovered there were EXACTLY enough seats for everyone in our Excursion so we filled up our gas tank and went. We adults took turns sitting up front,  in the “good” middle seats and the dreaded third row - I sure missed that rental van when I was stuck in the back! We took one lunch break on the way and as soon as we made it to San Antonio headed straight for the river walk.

Actually, I took seven steps after getting out of the car and immediately rolled my ankle off of the darn, rolled curb. Oh-my-goodness it hurt so much and I was SO angry at myself; I didn’t want to ruin the trip 3 minutes after arriving! So, everyone walked to the River Walk and I hobbled and leaned on WD. I really wanted to take pictures. REALLY. But, did you know that those quaint little cobblestone pavings around the River Walk are sheer hell-on-earth when one is hobbling around with an angry ankle? I had to grit my teeth and keep a constant eye on the path in front of me while trusting WD to keep me from knocking into people/tables/walls. I also don’t remember there being so many stinkin’ steps – ugh!

I did manage a quick bad pic of the girls on the steps though. Poor girls – the bishop was taking this picture but then I just whipped my camera out and hollered “smile” so they’re looking every which way!

DSCN0639

And as we headed towards the Alamo I snagged this one. That’s the bishop on the left trying to get the girls picture too :)

DSCN0635

My ankle was swelling as we got to the Alamo so I sat down and stuck my camera out and snapped this real quick –  just to say I was there!

DSCN0640

We hit an ice-cream shop before we made it to the hotel and called it a night. WD then drove around, getting acquainted with San Antonio, looking for a pharmacy stocked with ace bandages and pain killers for me ;) .

The next morning we drove to the gorgeous San Antonio Temple. They were booked that weekend so we simply walked the grounds and found a quiet little corner surrounded by flowers to sit. We had a beautiful lesson by the bishop followed by our individual testimonies. It was truely beautiful and spirit-filled memory that I cherish.

Next – the missions! They are amazing – so-so-so neat to think of their age, their history and the lives that were lived inside those walls. I took an INSANE number of pictures. Truely ridiculous but, I couldn’t stop myself! The carvings were amazing, the woodwork was amazing. The stone was amazing! The trees were amazing! I loved the windows, I loved the doors, I loved the little gun windows (basically tiny holes just big enough to put a gun rifle through to shoot intruders). Seriously, it was ridiculous how many pictures I took of these darn things. The BEST part was the wedding that was being held. OH MY GOODNESS! I actually stuck my camera in through.the.door of the chapel to take the most blurry, horrid wedding shot ever but I just couldn’t stop myself! And yes. You have to look at all most of them!

Look at that bell tower!

DSCN0658

Look at those stone windows!

DSCN0657

Look at the girls thinking I’m a nut!
DSCN0662

Look at that window! That door!
DSCN0664

LOVE this – I don’t know what it is but I wanted to pick her up and take her home!
DSCN0670

Services are still held in this chapel – isn’t it amazing?
DSCN0672

Look at how the stone is falling in this arch and it’s being supported by steel!
DSCN0678

So beautiful and simple and quaint…
DSCN0682

And this just cracked me up – to look through this ancient doorway and see the soda machine!
DSCN0687

The girls were SO over my picture taking…
DSCN0686

SERIOUSLY over it!
DSCN0688

This is – without a doubt – my absolute favorite. Oh how I wish I was a photography guru to know how to use PS to make this even better. Or even take a better photo. But I still love it. LOVE it!
DSCN0690

Through this most, amazingly gorgeous door? Is a wedding. IN. PROGRESS!
DSCN0692

I’m an official wedding crasher now…
DSCN0693

It was SO quiet there. I know a picture can’t show that but it was SO quiet; so peaceful. And the architecture, the sun, the song in my heart… somehow it just all combined and brought a tear to my eye peeking at this wedding and I wanted a little piece of it to keep. So I stole a picture of a total.random.stranger’s wedding. Does that make me a weirdo?

Isn’t this ladder and window amazing?
DSCN0691

The front doors – the AMAZING front doors to that chapel and wedding inside. And oh yeah. The beautiful ladies in front of them!
DSCN0701

I want those doors. Really. And that balcony. And those carvings.
DSCN0696

Another wedding – yay!
DSCN0702

One of those gun-window things. I kinda want to install one in my house now… What? It’s Texas!
DSCN0703

Another favorite…
DSCN0707

Oh my goodness, I have to wrap this up it’s turned into a novel. We ate, we laughed, we window shopped…
DSCN0709

DSCN0711

and then we drove home. It was an amazing experience to bond with the girls in a small group setting in a way that we don’t normally get to. The entire 3+ hour trip there and back, as well as any down time, was spent in thoughtful, spiritual and revealing conversation with these sweet, sweet daughters of God. I’m truly blessed to work in my calling.

And on another note – could I have used any more exclamation marks? I need help.

Seeing red

Oh boy, this is an oldie but it’s too good to not share. This past spring, April I belive, I pulled into my driveway after work as usual. Something caught my eye and I slowly took in the following scene:

And then? Then I saw this:

DSCN0622

After that I think I had a stroke. I’m hazy on the details but within seconds of seeing my face, Flower had a tub of water and a sponge, scrubbing with all her might and crying hysterically. Poor girl, I hadn’t even yelled at her or punished her yet…that was still to come.

DSCN0625

I sent her in the house to deal with her later while I surveyed the damage:

There had been more handprints here but she got to it before I came back out with the camera:
DSCN0626

Same here – it was more “art” before she started trying to clean it up.

 DSCN0623

But this… This is what I was REALLY worried about:

DSCN0622

Never mind that she had gotten into my FORBIDDEN craft closet and taken one of my paints. Never mind that she had painted half-a-dozen things that were most certainly NOT paper. Never mind that her brother was doing a rotten job of “baby sitting”. And don’t EVEN get me started on the lit birthday candles – that right there is stroke-worthy all on it’s own!

My neighbors BRICK HOUSE was painted in RED acrylic paint. AUUGHH!

DSCN0622

And I had less than an hour to make dinner, get homework done and get out the door to our YW activity that I was in charge of that night.

First thing I did was call WD and tell him all about how rotten HIS children were. Then I took a deep breath and knocked on my neighbors door.

Turns out, only one of the handprints on the house came from my child, the other was from the neighbor’s daughter who is also the same age (phew!). WD came home right after and with plenty of soap, hot water and scrubbing, the brick came clean! Although, my little scrubbie brush will never be the same.

DSCN0628

And no, Flower was NOT beaten or harmed in any way. She was lectured without mercy before she was grounded from anything fun for an entire week.

oh.my.word

I’ve recently found this website and it’s like a car wreck; awful and yet I can’t stop looking. It’s also pure genius rolled up in pure horror, let me know what you think:

People of Walmart

I especially love the website explanation – here’s an excerpt:

People of Walmart was founded in August of 2009 by three friends and roommates after an inspirational trip to WalMart.

Let’s face it; we all have seen the people who obviously don’t have mirrors and/or family and friends to lock them in a basement, and they all seem to congregate at Walmart. It’s not everywhere that you can shop for milk at 10 a.m. next to a 400lb mother of 6 wearing a pink tube top, leopard tights, and hooker heels. Where else can one go to pick up underwear at 3 O’clock in the afternoon and spot the greatest mullet of all time paired with a mustard stained wife beater (which only accents the extreme amount of body hair) and camo pants that were actually used in Vietnam.

Visit the website at your own risk, it’s not for the very young. I’m already planning my next trip to Walmart and practicing my furtive picture-taking skills!

Labor Day weekend recap

Was CRAZY busy and I have almost NO pictures so prepare to be bored to DEATH!

First – I cleaned the girls room. I was horrified. HORRIFIED by what I found when I moved furniture. I would tell you but it would either keep you from ever having children or you’d sell the ones you have. Just believe me. Once the girl’s room was picked up we got to clean the yard and the rest of the house.  The merriment around here – you have no idea.

Saturday night was the good part though because we had several good friends from church over for BBQ’d ribs and games. The house was bursting  (I think we planned on 19 people including kids?) and we had SO much fun eating and laughing and then eating some more. I love lazy, friend-filled nights like that!

Sunday at church was a tiny bit exciting – WD got moved from 2nd to 1st counselor in the bishopric. Hopefully, it’ll be a smooth and easy transition for him. Otherwise, just the normal, very busy stuff.

Sunday night we got to BABYSIT my precious little tub-o-lub nephew. I really wanted to take his picture but…

First he pooped, then he was hungry and the bottle just wasn’t as good as his mama’s “natural” bottle so he got cranky pretty quickly. Then he filled his diaper again and I discovered that we’d just used the last diaper in the bag! He was NOT a very happy boy so I only got a couple quick pics at the beginning of the evening. That’s right people – aunt Nini conceived and birthed a boy child for me!!! Love her ;) ! He joined us in June which was part of the whole dead ‘puter period.

Below – the day he was born. 9lbs, 1oz. Amazing considering my lil sister’s size!

Glorious Monday - Labor Day. We slept in. We puttered. We ate leftovers and the kids played with friends. Then WD and I went out to Carrabas for dinner and finished the evening with a family trip to Target. Totally a perfect day and a great weekend :).

Oh dear

So recently, due to a several *ahem* events…and *ahem* questions….um….well. We sat down with Flower and had a little talk about the Birds and the Bees.

Thankfully, we’ve had a little experience in this department as our older two have already had the talk and we felt pretty confident about our approach. First, we covered it’s purpose – which is really about making babies. Then it’s important to talk about what makes up a family, starting with the Mommy and the Daddy. We made sure to cover how God made it so that it takes TWO people to make a baby because that’s how He intended for the family to be structured. We talked about the importance of being ready to be a parent before having s*x and the sacred responsibility that is involved in being a parent. We stressed the importance of being married; VERY important.

Then came the nuts and bolts (so to speak). I don’t think you need me to go into detail here but if you do, send me an email and we’ll set up a time (hee!).

After that, we covered how the WORLD views s*x. The importance of understanding that it is not “dirty” or “bad” but something important and sacred to marriage and family. We expressed our hope that she would come to us if she had any questions later on and not listen to the stories or misleading information that kids at school (or anywhere) might want to share.

Whew – it’s exhausting for sure. There’s so much information involved and this talk can be stressful for both us and our kid.

She did pretty well. She listened intently and with solemn eyes. She absorbed quietly.

And so then we asked, just to review, when would she be ready for s*x?

She pondered for a minute and said, “Well. If he has a nice car. And a good job.”

AUUUGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH!!

Was she even in the same room with us??!!  And so, back to the drawing board we went…
